Estela de Carlotto, founder of "Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo"
Estela de Carlotto is the president of “Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo”, an association that searches for kidnaped people during the dictatorship. She gave an interview to Bede’s students. There, she said: “The grandmothers are not special women, are just mothers”. Estela said that they looked for their children as any mother would do. “They were kidnapped because they didn't agree with the goverment and they were taken to concentration camps like sheep, police stations and houses taken by force.
She said: “The good thing was that we got together to search them and not alone, because together we could share ideas and ask ourselves what we should do?”. Estela explained that they did not find all the people, there are still are more than 300 grandmothers who are still searching for their grandchildren. Only 130 were found.
She told us that during the dictatorship, when they went to the police stations to find their grandchildren, the policemen said that they were searching for them and that they could not do anything more. Also Estela said that the people were in a concentration camps and when the democracy returned, some were found and others were not.
