The name of this novel is “The Last Word”, by Veronica Sukaczer. The story talks about a girl called Dalia who confused the verbs and suffered bullying at school for this reason. When Dalia was nineteen years old she still didn’t know what to do with her life, until her mother received an old book from the age of pirates. Since then, Dalia started an adventure to search why her mother received that book.
Veronica wrote her young life in Dalia
As I was putting Dalia´s image in my head I noticed that what was formed was very similar to what the author herself told about her childhood and adolescence in an interview in Clarín. There she explained that as she had hearing problems she was discriminated at school, she had a hard time communicating, she had to develop adaptations so that others would not realize what was happening to her and she often felt isolated and ashamed. And Dalia was a girl that had a problem that confused the verbs, she was also discriminated at school. To solve this problem, the main character didn´t talk and pretended to be a normal girl, the same as Veronica did.
My Feelings
When I was reading the novel, I felt trapped and that made me continue reading. At the end of the story I was surprised and shocked by the strange ending. I felt a bittersweet feeling in all my body. The end was different than I expected.
My comments
I loved this novel when I read it during the winter holidays. The narrator is very fluent and catchy. It is a book with few pages with interesting content. It has easy vocabulary for kids of the age of 12 to 15 years old. I liked the way Veronica solved the story. I didn't like end, but I can still recommend it.
